Training Tips for English Mastiff Puppies

English Mastiff Puppies can be a wonderful addition to any family but there are a few things to consider before bringing those cute, furry mastiff puppies home.

First of all you MUST consider that your cute "little" mastiff puppies will soon weigh over 100 lbs. and will need enough space not only to stretch out but also somewhere to exercise and sleep.

Mastiffs can be both great inside dogs and outside as long as you are sure to give them plenty of love and attention no matter where they spend their time.

Here are a few things to think about before taking the leap to mastiff puppies ownership:

  • If keeping your mastiff puppies, inside you need a good size house
  • Some ground rules in mind when it comes to getting on the furniture(remember he/she will soon be over 100 lbs.)
  • Feeding & water bowls (they need lots of water)
  • A yard big enough to get some good exercise
  • If keeping outside, a fenced yard and a extra large doghouse are really good ideas
  • Age appropriate toys for chewing
  • Proper grooming tools
  • A good balanced puppy food
  • Plenty of "drool rags" handy inside and out!

A little preparation goes a long way in making your new mastiff puppies part of the family. Although your cute "little mastiff puppies" will soon be larger than life, so will the love you feel and the loyalty they will have for you.

If you start out training your mastiff puppies and develop a good exercise routine, raising your puppies will be as easy as raising any breed of puppy.

You will also need to have a vet in mind before you bring your puppies home so that you can continue their vaccination schedule as well as have someone to call if you have any health questions.

Starting your puppies on a good healthy diet leads to a healthy dog. A good puppy or dog food does not mean it has to be expensive. You may have to do a little trial and error until you find the right mix but once you do, it will not only keep them healthy but also make it easier on cleaning up after them.

It is also a good idea to break their feedings into 3 or 4 feedings while they are puppies and move up to feeding just 2 times a day.

If you are planning on keeping your puppy inside, it will be a good idea to have plenty of puppy training pads before your bring your mastiff puppies home.

Grooming your mastiff puppies can really be very easy as long as you have the tools.

Brushing their coat at least once a day not only helps with shedding but also helps with smell and keeping their coat looking shiny and healthy.

How often you bathe them will really depend on if you keep them indoors or out but once a month will usually do the trick.

Just remember though, the sooner you start giving your mastiff puppies a bath, the easier it will be once they reach their full weight.

My dad got a 4 month old Bull Mastiff earlier this year. She's now 9 months old. He says she's the best dog he's ever had. Our PitBull used to be the best until she got her leg amputated due to cancer, started being treated different, and she started getting dog aggressive. Either way, he's already started in on getting another one once the APBT has passed. I'll be getting another APBT, as I'm loyal to the breed, but my bf wants a mastiff after seeing Bayley in action.

The current pup gets random bursts of energy, runs around the back yard like a made woman, and then when she's in the house just lays there. She'll eat her bowl of ice (her favorite treat), and just lay down. Sometimes she'll bark at you if she doesn't think you're giving her enough attention or if you're in a different room. She's rotten

We have 2 pups who weigh in at 53 lbs and they're only 18 weeks. I'm expecting them to finish around 250 as their grand dad is 265. Perfectly healthy and great balls of fire. And its true -- they're gentle giants.

Whitney05,

I know what you mean about rotten, our female is 2 yrs old but still acts like a puppy. If you are not paying her enough attention, she pouts like a little kid. She loves to run outside in the yard even if it is just for 5 or 10 minutes, she feels like its her right almost every time the door is opened. They are so very loyal though, just great additions to the family!

Beth 100,

Thanks for stopping by! And WOW! sounds like you have some very healthy pups. Ours are not quite that big but still seem huge, especially when they stand next to our neighbors lab.

Thanks for the information and videos. I enjoy learning about different dog breeds. I have another "gentle giant" in my home - a Leonberger - as well as a labrador retriever.

I got my first English Mastiff this past Fall, and he's now 17 weeks. He's been such a good pup thus far and although stubborn sometimes, he defintiely aims to please! The reason for this post, is that I noticed a lump on his groin area last night. I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow, but am very very concerned about it. I didn't realize that puppies of suce a young age could get tumors! I'm terrified that it won't be a fatty tumor, but something more serious. Does anyone out there have any experience with this? Got any advice? Thanks!!
