I have been writing on HubPages for a little over a year now and although I am by no means an authority, I have learned a lot of things that are important to becoming successful.
If you are a veteran to writing online or HubPages, this will probably not be of much interest but if you are a new writer, then I hope it helps! If you are not currently writing on HubPages but would like to share your ideas or join me in making money writing, sign-up here.
I put together five tips that I have found to be key in achieving success while working online and more importantly writing on HubPages.
Just remember these are from personal experience and by no means represents what might work for others. Everyone must find what works for them, I had known some of this when I first started, it would have helped me greatly.
5 Tips For Writing on HubPages
- Set Goals And Stay Focused
- Proper Nutrition For Brain And Body
- Taking Breaks To Increase Productivity
- Always Experiment With New Ideas
- Be Consistent
Set Goals And Stay Focused
After being here for over a year now I realize more and more the importance of setting realistic goals to prevent becoming stressed over the overall result. Google changes are a way of life in the online world, so deal with it. The old adage " Do not put all your eggs in one basket" still holds true.
People join HubPages for various reasons:
- Some love to share their ideas, recipes, how to tips, or even poetry
- Some are here because they like to write but they also want to supplement their incomes
- Then there are those who are here purely to earn a little cash
Regardless of the reasons, there are some great writers here and I am glad to be a part of it. HubPages can be a great source of traffic, backlinks, and supplemental income but as with any endeavor it will have good days and bad. Just be sure to set realistic goals and stay focused on your task at hand.
Proper Nutrition For Brain And Body
This step is so often overlooked by the online community but in my opinion it is one of the most important.
Eating properly is so different because of lifestyle and heath issues I will not even try try to say what is right for anyone other than myself.
I do notice that my productivity and overall well being are better with four or five small nutritious meals throughout the day but you need to figure out what works for you. Of course a cup of coffee every now and then is always on my menu!
Don't go through the day without eating at all and always try to avoid eating at the computer. Taking breaks to eat away from the computer gives your brain a much needed break and you tend to eat less.
Taking Breaks To Increase Productivity
Taking exercise breaks on the hour during the day really helps me clear the cobwebs. This is only a suggestion but I try to walk on my Elliptical or work in my garden for a few minutes each hour.
When I was a little younger I thought if I just kept my nose to the grindstone things would work themselves out. I seem to produce so much more work once I started trying to manage the stress and focus issues associated with being at a desk all day.
Always Experiment With New Writing Ideas
Once you find a writing style that works for you it is tempting to stick with it. Writing online is wonderful but it sorta sucks if no one ever sees it, so you have to experiment with titles, keywords, article length, image placement and etc.
I always try to set aside a certain amount of time in my writing to experiment, it has lead me to several ideas that have increased traffic which usually increases income.
Some writers here at HubPages say that they write to just write with no regard for income which is great but I assume you still want people to see it. This takes either luck or some SEO (search engine optimization), this is why I say "it's important to never get stale and always experiment."
Be Consistent
Being consistent is a daunting task at best, it seems life is always trying to get in the way. This takes me back to my first tip of setting realistic goals.
If goals are unrealistic you will find it very hard to be consistent , you see where I am going with this. Writing online seems to be a marathon not a sprint and success is measured by months and years not by days.
Looking through the forums I see people complaining about traffic and how much money they have or have not made and it is frustrating when it is your traffic or your money. But just remember if you follow these 5 basic tips when writing on HubPages, your efforts will not go unnoticed. I try to stay focused and judge my success on a yearly basis with one simple question, how much money did I make?

Great advice! I think it's a must that I begin to take breaks every now and then, however I think that time should be spent either doing exercise or being sociable!

This is really good advice. I especially like your advice on eating well. You're right: we often forget that we are physical beings, because we are so caught up in our ideas, but that is extremely important. Voted up, useful beautiful and awesome. Nice work!
